The Colossus of Rhodes - One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to be reconstructed.

Municipal authorities on the island of Rhodes, Greece, are seeking to reconstruct the ancient wonder of the Colossus of Rhodes to a current wonder of the 21st century aiming at re-introduce the island to the world.

It was a statue of the Greek Sun God Helios straddling the ancient harbor, erected on the Greek island of Rhodes by master sculptor Chares of Lindos taking 12 years to build (292 and 280 BC). It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son unsuccessfully besieged Rhodes in 305 BC. Before its destruction in 226 BC – due to an earthquake – the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 30 meters (107 ft) high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.

A significant amount of funds could be secured by contributions of international organizations, the European Commission and UNESCO; but also through the activation of Greek and international prominent figures; in this respect Hellenes of Diaspora and philhellenes could become ambassadors of the idea and lead an International Fund-raising campaign.

The municipality of Rhodes, representative of the Colossus of Rhodes project, recently launched the multi-language website http://kolossosproject.org/ that explains the initiative in detail.
